Imagine keeping a cow in your one BHK flat, instead of an LPG cylinder.

A researcher at the local government Veterinary College, Zulfkar-ul-Haq, has claimed that methane generated from the process of rumination of the livestock animals can be converted into a liquified fuel, which can be used as cooking fuel.

Haq told PTI, "The methane generated by the rumination of domestic animals can be channelled through a mask attached with a pipe into a chamber where it can be converted into a liquified fuel."

"This will also help checking global warming as methane is one of the greenhouses gases that play a major role in increasing temperatures worldwide. India's domestic animal population is much more than any other country," he said.

He claimed that the liquified methane can be used for cooking and as fuel for vehicles.

According to an estimate, a domestic animal which ruminates (cows, for e.g.) releases 250-500 litres of methane into the environment and international scientists community is worried about this, he said.

He claimed that his idea got award for "The Best Innovative Idea" at the national convention of Indian Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Research (IAAVR) at Jaipur in February and now he was busy making a workable appliance based on it.
