The carcass of a lioness, which fell into a farm well in Amreli district of Gujarat was recovered along with her two cubs, forest officials said on Monday.

The five-month-old lion cubs were rescued by a team of forest officials in Jafrabad Taluka in Hemal village on Sunday after they fell into a 20-feet well on Saturday night, J K Malwana, District Forest Officer (DFO), Amreli said.

They were treated by a veterinary doctor immediately on the spot, he said.

The lioness was later fished out from the well, owned by one Nanabhai Kalabhai Vavadiya, the official said.

The farmer informed the forest officials when he saw a lion making the rounds of the well in the early hours on Sunday and found that the lioness and cubs had fallen into it.

He lowered a wooden cot into the well and aided their rescue the cubs with the help of a forest team using cage and nets.

"After rescuing the cubs, we launched a hunt for their mother in nearby area and found the carcass afloat in the well," said V Parmar Range Forest Officer.

"We tried to trace the lion in nearby areas but could not locate it," he said.

Both these lion cubs are on their way to wildlife care centre at Sasan as they cannot be released into Gir forests at this stage, he said.
