Project to protect Majuli island
A project to protect the Majuli island in Assam from flood and erosion has been under implementation and about to be completed in two months.
According to a release issued by the planning commission on Tuesday, the project cost is estimated at Rs. 115.99 crore at 2010 price level, and it is expected to be completed by the financial year 2011-12. The project is called “Protection of Majuli Island, Assam from flood and erosion, Phase II and III”.
The Ministry of Water Resources/Brahmaputra board have been handed the duty of restricting expenditure to prevent cost overruns. The board will also ensure regular maintenance before and after each monsoon season. The standing committee of experts will prepare surveys and give the final sanction. In case of major variation in cost due to changes in the problem area on account of morphological changes in the river, modified proposal and revised estimate would be furnished as per prescribed procedure.
