Railways' first wind mill in this island town, installed to overcome acute power problem faced by the local Railway station, was formally commissioned by Southern Railway General Manager Deepak Kishen today.

The Rs 3.1 lakh wind mill would generate 850 Watt electricity, he told reporters.

He said Rameswaram would be made a Model Station at a cost of Rs.10.81 crore. The Railways had already spent Rs.3.07 crore on the station development programme.

He said the demand for a day train between Madurai and Rameswaram was pending due to non-availability of coaches. But there was a proposal to operate trains from Dindigul to Rameswaram via Madurai.

Referring to the demand for reviving the train service to Dhanushkodi, he said soil condition and the sea level were being surveyed.

He also inaugurated the Passenger waiting facility in this town and also the workers quarters at Mandapam and Ramanathapuram.
