UP: No headway in RTI applicant attack case

The Uttar Pradesh police is yet to make any arrests in the case of Dr Aamarnath Pandey- the RTI applicant who was shot at on Wednesday.

Pandey, 55, was attacked at around 9 pm in Robertsganj, Sonebhadra district, when he was returning after a meeting.

He suffered injuries on head and was rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to the BHU hospital.

Pandey, a Congress worker, had filed RTI applications seeking details of fund expenditure under MNREGA scheme in Ghorawal development block.

A homeopathy doctor, he had written to the state and centre governments about the fund embezzlement by the BDO, Rajesh Yadav and others.

“A MNREGA team had conducted an enquiry based on the complaint filed by Dr Pandey and found that there was a scam worth Rs 150 crore,”

Mahendra Kumar, an RTI activist from Sonebhadra told Governance Now.

“The BDO was suspended last October. But he obtained a stay order from the High court and was made the BDO of Myerpur block,” he added.

Jaishankar Pandey, a fellow RTI activist said, “This attack can be the work of someone who was going to be exposed by Dr Aamarnath’s RTI queries.”

The police has registered an FIR against three people.
