Medical education and research director allegedly procured anti-biotics without without approval

An ex-official of Maharashtra Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has come under the police scanner with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) registering an FIR against him in a medical drug procurement case.

C P Tawre (63), former director of the DMER, had procured an antibiotic drug for two years since 2003, without approval and did not follow mandatory tender procedures that caused a loss of Rs 92 lakh to the Maharashtra government, Additional Police Commissioner (ACB) Niket Kaushik said.

Tawre, who retired in 2005, would be summoned by the Bureau soon, he said.

DMER is an apex body that supervises the working of 42 institutions including medical and dental colleges, teaching hospitals and health units under its purview in order to achieve optimum academic standards.

The fraud was exposed during an audit conducted by Audit General which pegged the loss at around Rs 92 lakh following the procurement of antibiotic drugs worth Rs three crore in 2003-2005, Kaushik said.

Subsequently, the government ordered ACB to conduct an inquiry into the alleged fraudulent practices in the procurement of the medicine, Kaushik added.

According to the inquiry, Tawre who violated the norms and procured the medicine from a Karnataka-based firm, he said adding the ACB is gathering more evidence aganist the former official.
