SPG changes security strategy after a breach

GN Bureau | October 3, 2012

The prime minister’s family was upset on seeing visuals of a man (reportedly an advocate) tearing off his shirt at Vigyan Bhavan right before PM Manmohan Singh was scheduled to deliver a speech there. The PM’s family have communicated in no uncertain terms their displeasure to the special protection group (SPG) which is in charge of the PM’s security. The SPG, once bitten, twice shy, is now taking elaborate measures to avoid any repeats of the breach of security that happened at Vigyan Bhavan. On the second day of the commemoration of Motilal Nehru’s 150th birthday at the Bhavan (Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and president Pranab Mukherjee were in attendance) the SPG sat two personnel in civilian clothing in each row. They had been instructe to watch all movements in their respective rows to preempt any attempt to breach security. So seriously was the arrangement taken that the Bhavan sat 750 guests while its seating capacity is 850. No prizes for guessing who took the remaining 100 seats!
