Punjab BJP MLA's judicial custody extended till June 6

A case of graft being extended for 10 days

A CBI court today extended the judicial custody of Punjab BJP MLA Raj Khurana and two others till June 6 in connection with a graft case.

Khurana, his private secretary Bhag Singh and Devinder Singh, an employee of the office of Registrar, Firms and Societies, Punjab were produced before a CBI special Judge Ritu Tagore at the expiry of their 14-day judicial custody remand. The court will hear the bail pleas of Khurana and Bhag on May 26.

Khurana, who demitted the office of chief parliamentary secretary after his arrest, told reporters outside the court that the case against him was "politically motivated".

He said he was "innocent" and also rubbished media reports that he had tried to commit suicide in jail barrack.

"I never tried to commit suicide," he said.

CBI had arrested Khurana, a BJP MLA from Rajpura, and Devinder after on the basis of a complaint received from Secretary of Punjab Automobile Mechanic Association Manpreet Singh alleging that the duo had demanded Rs 1.5 crore bribe from an official of Registrar, Firms & Societies, Punjab, for closing a complaint against the Association.

A CBI raid at the residence of Khurana resulted in the recovery of Rs 15 lakh cash and Rs 1.35 crore through cheques.

The agency had alleging the bribe was to be handed over through Khurana to local bodies and Industries Minister Manoranjan Kalia for closing the complaint against Manpreet Singh and other office bearers of the Association.

Bhag was arrested for writing a note, on behalf of Khurana, which was addressed to the local bodies and Kalia, but was not dispatched and instead kept in the then Technical Education Minister Swarna Ram's office.
