In a bid to check food quality and hygiene standards in food units across Gujarat, the state food authorities have geared up to put in force the Food Safety and Standard Act (FSSA)-2006, a top official said here today.

The new Act, which focuses on checking food quality and hygiene at outlets, will replace Prevention of Food Adulteration Act 1954, which was confined to only checking of adulteration in food items.

"Around 145 food inspectors including those from municipal councils, municipal corporations and state government will be imparted a day long training on implementation of Food Safety and Standard Act 2006," Commissioner Food and Drugs Control Administration H G Koshia said.

There are close to 167 sanctioned posts of food inspectors in the state.

"Experts from Mumbai will impart training to these food inspectors during the day-long programme," he said.

"In turn these food inspectors will train food vendors and food processing units in the state about hygiene and best quality manufacturing practises," Koshia said.

Concerned over the falling standards of food quality and hygiene at food units across the country, Central Government had urged all the states to ensure implementation of FSSA-2006, a state official said.
