J-K directs far flung areas to store food grains

Frontier region of Ladakh remains cut-off in winter due to heavy snowfall

Jammu and Kashmir government has directed time-bound stocking of food grains in the far flung areas including frontier region of Ladakh which usually remains cut off from rest of the state during winter months owing to heavy snowfall.

The direction was given to the officers by minister of state for consumer affairs and public distribution Shabir Ahmad Khan, currently on a tour of Leh district.

According to an official spokesman, the minister inspected food godowns of Food Corporation of India at Leh and Phyang besides power development department (PDD) infrastructure in the region.

The minister was told that 8275 metric tonnes (MT) of rice, 10664 MT of wheat and 608 MT of sugar are available in FCI godowns in Leh, 434 kms from Srinagar, the spokesman said.
