Harda MLA Kamal Patel arrested on charges of destroying murder eveidence

Former Madhya Pradesh revenue minister and BJP MLA Kamal Patel has been arrested by CBI here for allegedly destroying evidence related to a murder case in which his son's name figured, CBI officials said today.

Patel, an MLA from Harda constituency, was questioned by CBI after which he was arrested last night, they said.

He will be produced in the CBI court at Indore where he will file his bail application.

On March 5, 2008, Patel's son Sudeep had gone with his friends to a farm house belonging to Congress leader Rajendra Patel at Deotalao where an altercation took place leaving one Durgesh Jaat dead.

Sudeep was later arrested and released on bail.

In an unrelated matter, both Patel and Sudeep are also alleged to have been involved in an attack on tribal-rights activist Shamim Modi in July last year. Modi and her husband Anurag had actively campaigned against the politicians-lumbering mills nexus in Harda, following which they received death threats, according to a report in the Frontline.

Former Madhya Pradesh Revenue Minister and BJP MLA Kamal Patel, who was arrested in connection with allegedly destroying evidence related to a murder case, today said CBI was trying to implicate him.

"I am innocent in the case and the CBI is falsely trying to implicate me," Patel, an MLA from Harda constituency, told reporters before leaving for Indore where he will be produced in a CBI court.

Patel has been arrested under sections 304, 204 and 120(B) charged with attempt for unintentional murder, conspiracy and destroying evidence.

Earlier, Patel was brought to the CBI office here where he was questioned for a long time.

The former minister was arrested last night in connection with the murder of Durgesh Jat on March 5, 2008 at the farm house of Congress leader Rajendra Patel at Deotalao

Durgesh's body has not been found till now even as Patel's son Sudeep Patel who had been arrested for the murder is on bail.

Patel was arrested by a team from the Lucknow branch of the CBI which had been asked by the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur to look into the matter.
