Ramesh Rout's election to the Assembly was declared null and void by the High Court

Orissa assembly today cancelled the membership of Ramesh Rout, elected last year from Athagarh constituency, following a high court verdict.

"I have already directed the Orissa Legislative Assembly (OLA) secretariat to cancel membership of Rout following an order by the Orissa High Court which declared his election as null and void," Speaker Pradip Kumar Amat told reporters.

The speaker also directed the OLA secretary to immediately withdraw facilities like quarter, salary, allowance to Rout as enjoyed by an elected member.

Orissa High Court while disposing an election-related case last month had declared Rout's election as null and void besides asking concerned authorities to conduct fresh polls in Athagarh assembly segment in Cuttack district.

Rout, who attended the first phase of the ongoing monsoon session of the assembly, had yesterday moved the Supreme Court challenging the verdict of the high court.

The high court also rejected a petition of Rout who prayed for permission to attend the assembly till end of the monsoon session.
