The corridors of power are abuzz with speculation following a noon meeting between prime minister Manmohan Singh and Anil Ambani. The meeting took place at the prime minister’s residence, 7, Race Course Road.
The meeting comes close on the heels of the Supreme Court judgement in the Kaveri Basin gas pricing row between Anil and elder brother Mukesh Ambani. There is a belief in the government, business and political circles that the dispute should be settled as quickly as possible because it is in nobody’s interest for two of the biggest companies of the country to be locked in battle.
Now that the court has said the government has the right to fix price of the gas and directed both Anil and Mukesh to redraw the gas purchase agreement in six weeks, it is quite likely that the topic will top the agenda for the meeting.
Anil Ambani spends Wednesdays in New Delhi to get a feel and sense of what’s happening in the corridors of power. His typical Delhi Wednesday would involve hopping from South Block to North Block to Udyog and Sashtri Bhavans.
Senior functionaries of the two Ambani companies are expected to meet later this week to start the process of renegotiating the gas purchase agreement.
