The verdict on the Bhopal gas trajedy, which took 26 years, has come late, said former Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan on Monday while addressing press. Balakrishnan has taken the charge as head of National Human Right Commission (NHRC). On quantum of punishment in this case Balakrishnan said,"I can't comment on the quantum of punishment. Inadequacy of a sentence is a ground for appeal and the aggrieved parties can appeal on the same ground."

Balakrishnan also said that the naxal issue is a complex issue to handle and there is human right violation of the security forces, the tribals and the common man, who have no access to education and health services.

On being asked about his opinion on mercy petitions lying for long with the President is violation to human rights, Balakrishnan said, "Those people are still living. Will executing them immidiately, not be violation to their human right."
