Bio and Electronic toilets for Delhi

Both the unit are on experimental basis and if found successful, more such toilets would be installed in high footfall areas and in the areas of tourist importance

In its search for cleaner, more hygienic, user-friendly and eco-friendly public toilets, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday embarked upon bio-toilets and electronic toilets in the city. Based on innovative technologies, these toilets will substantially save upon water, energy and space.

The bio-toilet was inaugurated at Nigam Bodh Ghat Parking Area on Mahatama Gandhi Marg (Ring Road) and electronic toilets near Kudesia Park, ISBT Kashmere Gate by Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney.

Sawhney said that bio-toilet is based on technology developed and approved by Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Ministry of Defence. He added that in these toilets, the faecal matter and sludge is decomposed in a pit using DRDO developed bacteria which convert the said waste matter into methane & water. The toilet is maintenance-free and requires minimum water. More than 100 bio-toilets are already in use at various army locations.

Whereas the electronic toilets, based on pay and use method, has been supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and developed by a Trivendaram based electronic devise company. This toilet will have an Automatic Payment Collection and the doors will open on inserting the coins.

Both the unit have been put up on experimental basis and installed free of cost by the concerned Agencies. The Mayor said that it is proposed to validate acceptability of the toilets in the next fifteen days and if found successful, more such toilets would be installed in high footfall areas and in the areas of tourist importance.
