Delhi traffic police forms citizen committees

Over 10,000 people to be targeted as part of the campaign

GN Bureau | February 15, 2012

In yet another step to involve citizens in managing traffic, Delhi police is forming traffic advisory committees (TACs).

Under the new initiative, panels will be formed in 43 circles and five ranges, the Hindustan Times reported today. At the level of circle the panel will have a traffic inspector, members of resident welfare associations, public representatives and market bodies. While at the range level a DCP, representatives from road-owning agencies, NGOs and social leaders, will be included.

An application form to become members of the traffic advisory committee will be available on the website and the Facebook page of the traffic police. Credentials of the applicants for TCC will be verified by the concerned police stations.

The TCC will help to identify and resolve the problems related to traffic management at the ground level. In case a problem is not resolved at the level of TCC at circle level, it will be referred to the TCC at range level and in case it is not resolved at that level it will be referred to joint commissioner of traffic police.

In a first for an organisation of its kind, the Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) had marked its presence on Facebook and Twitter in order to interact with the citizens. Today there are over 99,000 people who like the DTP Facebook page and post pictures of traffic violation on the page.

DTP in past had introduced the concept of traffic volunteers and traffic wardens to achieve public cooperation in road safety and traffic management.
