The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) will soon be reviewed externally once in three years. The decision was taken in a meeting of the IIM council attended by the Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and chairpersons and directors of the management institutes.

The minister said,"It will be social audit of institutes. To check on the quality of education, and the research being done."

In the meeting, the progress in the establishment of the new IIMs was also reviewed. The land issues of all new IIMs has been resolved.

The central government has also approved a scheme for enhancing research in IIMs. It has increase the output of Ph.Ds from each of the existing IIMs. A sum of Rs 95 crore has been approved for an additional 100 Ph.Ds from the 13 IIMs. It was also decided to upgrade facilities in hostels and make residential facilities of a world-class level to attract students and faculty from other countries.

IIMs have found a solution to ease pressure on students. The bigger institutes would share their admission information and co-ordinate their counselling systems with the new ones. This will help students as they will not have to move from one state to another for interviews.

The council has also decided to expand the search for management solutions in problems of relevance to the nation and society. The management institutes will soon starte programmes and organize curricula in areas such as energy management, academic institution management, health management and agriculture management.
