The mushrooming of coaching centers across the country has forced the ministry of Human resource Development to formulate a new examination pattern for entrance into IIT.

The new pattern if approved by the IIT council will not just give 40% weight age to board examination’s result but will also have two different exams.

“We are proposing to have two exams – one main exam which will judge the general intelligence of students in subjects of science. The second will be an advanced exam which will test the learning in depth. This examination will be set only by IIT faculty,” HRD minister Kapil Sibal said.

He added that the top two percent children compete to enter the IITs but only few manage to get admission and it is more difficult to enter IIT than MIT.

“This competition has brought lot of pressure on students. And this has also resulted in setting up of coaching centers.” The minister also said that such centers restrict the entry of deserving students who cannot afford the fee of these centers.

“We are in the process of finalizing a methodology to give 40% weightage to school board in the IIT exams so that children do not move away from school education. The name of the examination will remain the same Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).”

He also said this examination pattern will maintain the IIT’s brand but it still needs the final approval from the IIT Council. Sibal wish to introduce the new pattern by 2013.

Also, the HRD ministry will soon be introducing a new process for appointment of IIT directors. “The directors will now have to submit a written plan on what they want to achieve and how they can do that. We will force them to think about the institute and we will hold them accountable for it.”

Sibal was addressing the gathering on the occasion of IIT Delhi’s golden jubilee. He also inaugurated the Innovation centre at the institute.
