People are disappointed with BJP, says Advani
In his latest blog entitled "BJP: A hub of hope," party patriarch Lal Krishna Advani has for the first time publicly shared his anguish over the people becoming disappointed with the party.
He penned the views he had shared at a BJP core committee meeting, attended by several RSS leaders, some weeks back, while reminiscing his 60 years' political journey.
"If people today are angry with the UPA government, they are also disappointed with us. The situation calls for introspection," he writes in his personal musings on blog.lkadavni.in.
Advani regrets that "the mood within the party these days is not upbeat." He indirectly put the blame on party chief Nitin Gadkari for several "lapses".
"The results in Uttar Pradesh and the manner in which the party welcomed BSP ministers who were ousted by Mayawati on charges of corruption, the party’s handling of Jharkhand and Karnataka – all these events have undermined the party’s campaign against corruption.
"The fact that we have a sizable contingent of MPs in parliament today as against the niggardly two seats in 1984, that our performance in the two Houses under Sushmaji and Jaitleyji has been excellent, that the party is in power in as many as nine states today is no compensation for the lapses committed."
HANGAL COMPARISON: Taking on a news report on Avtar Kishan Hangal aka AK Hangal, a yesteryear's film actor, shooting for TV at the age of 97, Advani recalls journalists comparing then Jana Sangh (which rechristened as BJP after split from Janata Party) with Hangal that he is always admired by cinegoers but he cannot sustain a full film.
He writes that the journalists would say: "Hangal is a brilliant character actor, but he is not a star; neither a hero, nor even a villain. Jana Sangh’s position in Indian politics is similar. Its patriotism and integrity secures for it the plaudits of all; but the party will never dominate the political scene."
Advani recalls challenging such comments and asserting that a day will certainly come when the situation will undergo a complete metamorphosis. "That has happened now. Today the BJP is a hope for all and if it commits even a minor lapse, it causes distress and disappointment in the people."
