UPA takes on baba Ramdev for evading tax

An amount of Rs 4 crore has not been deposited since 2006

GN Bureau | August 6, 2012

The UPA2 has decided to take on yoga guru baba Ramdev. Ramdev, who is campaigning against black money may have to explain the black money he has been generating by evading payment of taxes to the government.

His Haridwar-based Divya Yog Mandir Trust, is being served with a notice to pay the service tax of approximately Rs 4 crore not deposited since 2006 in the garb of being a charity institution.

The Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCET) has written to the government that the tax defalcation has been calculated after recording statements of the trust's general secretary Acharya Balkrishna, a key aide of Ramdev, in April as also that of trust incharge Shyam Veer Saini in October and November last year and again in May.

The Income Tax department has already denied the charitable nature of the trust as claimed by Baba Ramdev's men to siphon off the tax payable on the "club and membership services."

The DGCET has also forwarded a complaint received by Swami Karamveer of Maharshi Patanjali Foundation, Lonavala, about the tax defalcations by the trust to the tax departments in Mumbai, New Delhi, Jaipur, Indore, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Raipur and Dehra Dun.
