RS ruckus fells MP, draws ‘animal’ remark

Perturbed at opposition commotion, Congress’s Renuka Chowdhury asks, ‘why behave like animals?’; apologises

GN Bureau | March 22, 2013

Presiding over proceedings going from bad to worse in the Rajya Sabha on Friday afternoon — slogan-shouting, trooping to the well of the House, attacking the chairperson’s mike, and one MP having to be moved to hospital after collapsing during the commotion — Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury adjourned the house till April 22 as the heat over the UN resolution against Sri Lanka refused to die down.

Such was the uproar when proceedings resumed at 2.30 pm, with Chowdhury in the chair and MPs belonging to DMK, AIADMK and the Left parties shouting slogans, that she is believed to have angrily asked the protesting members, “Why do you behave like animals?”

With the remark making MPs from Tamil Nadu angrier still, Chowdhury adjourned the house. But as AIADMK members continued demanding an apology from Chowdhury, the Congress MP finally came down and apologised for her remark.

The MPs were protesting that the government had betrayed the feelings of Tamils by not making serious enough efforts to bring in a stronger resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC on Thursday.

Soon as proceedings resumed, AIADMK and DMK members went up to the Well and began protesting the government’s “inaction” — the slogan-shouting went on for nearly 20 minutes. At one stage, AIADMK leader V Maitreyan tore some papers and mishandled the microphone placed near him.

Amid all the commotion, DMK MP Trichy Siva collapsed on his chair. Parliament doctors checked on him and found a slight variation in his ECG level. Siva was immediately rushed to RML Hospital and is undergoing treatment at the hospital’s critical care unit. Fellow DMK MP Selvaganapathy was with Siva when reports last came in.
