Supreme court grants a month's relief to Sanjay Dutt

Supreme court extends the surrender deadline for the Bollywood actor to May 16

GN Bureau | April 17, 2013

The supreme court has granted an extension of four weeks for surrender to Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt in a case relating to the 1993 bom blasts in Bombay. Dutt was supposed to surrender by April 18 according to the court's March 21 order. But on Wednesday the court rejected a petition from the actor seeking a six month extension to work on pending film projects allowing him only four weeks. The court further ordered that no extension shall be granted hereafter.

Dutt had filed the petition saying that Rs 278 crore invested by film-makers had come under risk following the March 21 ruling in which his sentence was commuted to five years inprisonment from six years. The actor has already served one-and-half years as an undertrial.

Dutt had been convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of arms.

The court, on Tuesday, had rejected an extension plea from three other accused in the case for their surrender.

Janata Dal leader Subramaniam Swamy, according to Firstpost, has slammed the extension saying that the court went soft on Dutt.
