Strict curbs on visitors to Parliament

Visiter cards to be issued only to MP's kin and people "very well known to them personally"

GN Bureau | September 1, 2011

The Parliament House security has been further tightened during the remainder of the monsoon session, citing "prevailing security scenario."

The same day "visitor cards" will be now issued to only spouses, children and close relatives of the MPs and that too not to more than two persons at a time, says a bulletin circulated by the centralised Pass Issue Cell.

The MPs have been also requested to ensure that other visitors for whom they seek the "visitor cards" are "very well known to them personally" and their applications should be filed latest by 1600 hrs on the working day, previous to the date for which the visitor card is sought.

They are also now required to issue a certificate while applying for the visitor cards for the galleries stating that "the above mentioned visitor/visitors are my relation/ personal friend(s)/ known to me personally and I take full responsibility for him/her/them."

The MPs are normally allowed to take any number of their "guests" to watch the Parliament proceedings for one hour and there is no curtailment of this right except for the passes sought on the same day, the Lok Sabha secretariat clarified.

The bulletin puts responsibility on the MPs to ensure that all particulars are duly filled up in the application forms, giving full name of the visitors and their father or husband and not just initials. "It will not be possible to issue visitor cards in the absence of full particulars as required in the application form."
