May Day march against corruption

Citizens across the country to do their bit to stamp out graft

GN Bureau | April 29, 2011

As the Jan Lokpal talks gather momentum, Avaaz, a global web movement to bring people-powered politics to decision-making, is organising a 'virtual march' on May Day. To make the most impact Avaaz aims to create noise everywhere - in the streets, online, on facebook, and in the halls of power.

It has invited people to join the march by giving their names and comment to a marcher. It is even asking them to change their Facebook profile photo and to keep building the massive petition which will be hand delivered to the Jan Lokpal Committee on Monday.

Here is a mail from the Avaaz team

Dear friends across India,

As the Jan Lokpal talks gather momentum, negotiators and decision-makers are feeling the heat of our people-powered movement.

The pressure is working, so let's ramp it up. This May Day citizens will march against corruption all across India. To all those politicians who think they can smear, delay, or outlast us, this is our chance to show that our movement is just getting started. To make the most impact we have to create noise everywhere - in the streets, online, on Facebook, and in the halls of power.

Click below to join the Avaaz action centre where you can get a list of march times and locations, join the virtual march by giving your name and comment to a marcher, change your facebook profile photo, or keep building our massive petition, which will be hand delivered directly to the Jan Lokpal Committee on Monday.

Three weeks ago, Anna Hazare declared a fast unto death until the government agreed to let civil society draft the Jan Lokpal bill. In just over 36 hours, 650,000 of us stood with Hazare to demand action. Four days later, we won! Proving that people power can prevail over the poison of political corruption.

The struggle won't be easy. Last week, poisonous allegations, contradictory reports and false scandals aimed to discredit civil society leaders and divide our movement inundated the press. But we reacted immediately -- launching a rapid response campaign with tens of thousands of us calling on PM Singh to rein in the smear campaign. This week, the smear machine seems to have gone quiet! We're winning, let keep the momentum going:

Prime minister Manmohan Singh has promised to bring Jan Lokpal to a vote by August. So for the next 3 months, we have to meet every challenge, block every tactic, and overcome every obstacle that's thrown in our way, to get the law that all Indians want. This Monday, let's give our leaders a taste of what's to come.

With hope and determination,
Ricken, Luis, Saloni, Shibayan, Ben and the whole Avaaz team
