Maha govt orders probe into CAG report leak

Mumbai crime branch to conduct inquiry

PTI | April 17, 2012

Maharashtra government on Tuesday ordered a police probe into the leak of CAG report, which the opposition termed as an attempt to put a pressure on a constitutional body.

The assembly witnessed four adjournments, amidst pandemonium, as the report was tabled today.

PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal (NCP) questioned the authority of the comptroller and auditor general to make remarks on the state government's policy decisions, while, industries minister Narayan Rane (Congress) sought permission to move a breach of privilege motion against newspapers Saamana and Loksatta, and newschannels IBN Lokmat and Star Majha.

Bhujbal said that when 3,160 institutions had got land for educational purposes since 1975, he wondered why a few ministers were being targeted. He was not the PWD minister when his institution applied for land in Nashik, he added.

Rane said he ran an engineering college in Kankavali which had 1,317 students who could not pay fees. "I pay from my own pocket to finance the administration of the college," he said.

Both the ministers said that they were pained by this targeting. Bhujbal said that even the late BJP leader, Hashu Advani, was given land for his institution as per the same norms as Bhujbal's own institution. Rane added that Hashu Advani got the land when he (Rane) was the chief minister, and he did not find anything wrong with that.

Home minister R R Patil told the house that Mumbai crime branch will conduct inquiry as to how confidential official documents (CAG report) were leaked before being tabled before the cabinet and the legislature, and the inquiry report would be tabled during the next session.

Bhujbal and Patil also pointed out that contents of the leaked report and the report submitted to the government differed.

But BJP MLA Devendra Phadanvis, who had provided the CDs containing leaked report to the media, objected to the probe saying it amounted to pressuring of an autonomous constitutional body.
