India's central government has been keeping a close watch on the situation arising out of the flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday.

Union home minister Amit Shah spoke with the chief ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, the two states that share the border with Nepal, regarding the disaster. In his post on ‘X’, he said that the devastation caused by the floods in Nepal was deeply tragic. "My condolences are with the families who have lost loved ones in this disaster. The government of India stands with Nepal in this hour of crisis. I spoke with the chief ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regarding the disaster in Nepal. In border areas likely to be affected, the local administration and rescue teams, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been placed on high alert."

 

As per an advisory of the Central Water Commission (CWC) and media reports, a sudden rise in river water level in the Trishuli at Furke Khola in Nepal, around 160 km from the Indian border, due to suspected flash flood/'GLOF' activity near the Nepal–China border, was reported. The impact of flood is likely to travel downstream in the Gandak river, in India.

 

The Bihar and Uttar Pradesh governments have taken measures such as required evacuation and other support to local Indian communities near the India–Nepal border. Both states have been advised to remain alert and maintain close monitoring of the situation.

 

Home ministry officers along with those of the ministry of external affairs (MEA), ministry of jal shakti and ministry of defence are continuously monitoring the situation. As per CWC, the water level on Nepal side reservoirs is reducing and the situation is under control. No panic-like situation has arisen.

 

There are report of missing Indian tourists in Nepal territory and MEA/Indian embassy in Kathmandu has issued emergency numbers for assistance and information regarding Indian nationals affected by the flash floods in Nepal.
