Aadhar gets Rs 14,000 cr from Budget

UIDAI has till date has enrolled around 20 crore residents and have issues close to 14 crore UID cards across the country

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday approved an allocation around Rs 14,000 crore in the Union Budget 2012 to complete the aadhar enrolment of 40 crore residents of the country by June 2013.

Nandan Nilekani-led unique identification authority of India will get a boost from the budgetary allocation as the UIDAI and the planning commission recently got into a row over funds demanded by the former to complete the targeted enrolment.

Prime minister Manmohan Singh post the budget presentation in an interview with Times of India has said, "We have made it quite clear that Aadhaar will form the underlying platform. The proposal to bring 40 crore people under Aadhaar scheme has been accepted. We will use modern technology to cut out leakages in the delivery mechanisms."

The authority has till now has enrolled around 20 crore residents and have issues close to 14 crore unique identity cards across the country.

Recently, aadhar as an authentication of identity has been proposed as a platform for direct transfer of subsidy into bank accounts of beneficiaries. Mukherjee during the budget speech also mentioned that aadhar payments platform for services such as scholarships, pensions, was ready for a rollout.
