CCEA may discuss phase II of IT modernisation project of DoP

Phase II envisages inter- connecting all 1.55 lakh post offices through Internet

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is likely to discuss phase II of IT modernisation project of Department of Posts which envisages inter- connecting all 1.55 lakh post offices through Internet.

"Phase II of IT Modernisation Project of DoP may be discussed at CCEA," sources said.

The IT Modernisation Project of DoP was approved by CCEA which was divided in three parts: Pilot, Phase I and Phase II.

In phase 1, DoP has to roll out modern IT solution in six circles namely, Assam, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh to ensure that geographical challenges faced, if any, during the phase is addressed before pan-India roll-out.

The project included computerisation of all post offices, core banking solutions including installation of 1000 ATMs, mail tracking, customer service call center and introducing eCommerce solution, handheld devices for post masters for update on services like mails, money order etc.

Under phase II of the IT project, DoP has plans to roll out modern IT solution in rest of the country.
