Enrolment of 60 cr people for Aadhaar by 2014-end

As on February 28,28,78,41,507 Aadhaar numbers have been generated; data for 34 crore (people) has been collected

The government will enroll the targeted 60 crore people for the unique identification number, Aadhaar, by end of 2014, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

Replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Planning Rajeev Shukla said so far 28.78 crore Aadhaar numbers have been generated.

"While 28,78,41,507 Aadhaar numbers have been generated as on February 28, data for 34 crore (people) has been collected," he said.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been tasked with enrolling 60 crore population while an equal number is to be registered by the National Population Registrar, he said.

"By end of 2014, 60 crore target will be completed," he said.

To a question, Shukla said provisions have been made for 100 per cent privacy of the data collected by the UIDAI.

Shukla admitted that there were delays in getting Aadhaar cards as the data processing takes 60 to 90 days and there could be some delays at the level of Indian Posts.

Shukla said the most number of Aadhaar cards have been issued in Andhra Pradesh where 5.36 crore numbers have been issued. It is followed by Maharashtra with 4.85 crore numbers being generated, Kerala 2.29 crore, Karnataka 1.90 crore, Madhya Pradesh 1.84 crore and Rajasthan 1.49 crore.

Delhi had 1.28 crore Aadhaar card holders while Uttar Pradesh had only 1.01 crore.

Arunachal Pradesh accounted for the least number of cards-- only 999.

Shikla said the Aadhaar enrolments are being done through state governments and he requested their cooperation in completion of the task at the earliest.
