Number of unsatisfied telecom subscribers rises to 85.41 lakh

TRAI report shows over 8.54 million customers have switched the service provider under MNP

Close to one per cent of the country's total telecom users have indicated dissatisfaction from their telecom service provider as a TRAI report shows that 85.41 lakh (8.54 million) customers have requested for mobile number portability (MNP) service till April-end. MNP services allows a customer to change his telecom operator while retaining his/her existing telephone number. According to TRAI, most of the customers in Gujarat circle (833,672) have shown dissatisfaction from their telecom service provider followed by Rajasthan with 710,767 customers and Karnataka with 663,151 customers requesting for MNP. The monthly telecom subscription report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India shows that the total number of telecom subscribers has grown to 861.48 million in April-end from 846.32 Million at the end of March, 2011. Total wireless subscriber base in the country increased from 811.59 million in March, 2011 to 826.93 Million at the end of April, 2011, registering growth of 1.89 per cent. Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 538.05 million in March, 2011 to 547.42 million at the end of April, 2011. Rural subscription increased from 273.54 million to 279.51 million during the month. This shows higher growth in rural subscription (2.18 per cent) compared to urban subscription (1.74 per cent). The overall wireless Tele-density in India reaches 69.19 Out of total wireless subscribers, 583.22 million subscribers were found active on telecom network in April. Idea reported highest percentage of active subscribers at 92.92 per cent, followed by Bharti Airtel with 89.51 per cent. This month Reliance Communications lead the wireless segment by adding 2.93 million new users in its network followed by Idea with 2.45 million. Bharti Airtel stood at third position in terms of adding new subscribers. The company added 2.4 million new subscribers in April. Vodafone added 2.4 million new users to its network. New player Uninor took over Aircel in adding new users to its network. Uninor added 1.45 million users, while Aircel added 1.1 million new customers to its network. The lowest addition till date was done by state-run telecom company MTNL. The company just added 367 new wireless customers. The other state-run telecom BSNL company added 173,000 new customers. On the other hand, wireline subscriber base continued to decline. In April, the wireline subscription reached to 34.55 million from 34.73 million subscribers in March. Broadband subscriber base in the country increased by 1.17 per cent from 11.87 million in March to 12.01 million in April, 2011.
