The national capital will soon have monorail. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday said the government has decided to introduce monorail in three to four years as it can travel to densely populated areas and requires comparatively less space than the metro rail to construct. The proposed service will be faster than Delhi Metro.

Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in the budget 2010 has granted 'project import status' to monorails in big cities, paving the way for importing equipment and parts at a much lower duty than those prevailing now. The government also hiked allocation for urban development ministry which is funding many public transport projects, including metros for big cities.
