The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Cologenesis Pvt. Ltd have launched ColoNoX, the country’s first nitric oxide-releasing wound dressing, aimed at improving treatment outcomes for patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU).

Developed by scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), the technology is covered under an Indian patent granted in 2018. Cologenesis Healthcare incubated the innovation, completing Phase II and III clinical trials before securing an exclusive licence through BARC’s Technology Transfer Programme. The product has received approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) for manufacturing and commercial distribution.

Diabetic foot ulcers remain a major complication among India’s expanding diabetic population, often requiring advanced wound-care solutions. ColoNoX delivers controlled doses of nitric oxide  known for its antimicrobial and tissue-regenerative properties  directly to the wound.

The dressing combines nitric oxide release with collagen-based hydrogel   which helps reduce pain, absorb exudates and create a favourable healing environment.

“This technology is expected to provide a more effective option for managing chronic wounds,” said Krishna Kumar, director of Cologenesis Healthcare, at the launch event in Salem.

DAE secretary and Atomic Energy Commission chairman Ajit Kumar Mohanty said the product addresses a critical treatment gap.

“ColoNoX represents a meaningful step toward delivering affordable and effective diabetic foot ulcer care in India,” said Mohanty  adding that the initiative reflects the department’s commitment to applying scientific innovation for societal benefit.

He noted that the development aligns with the government’s Make in India and Make for the World initiatives.

BARC director Vivek Bhasin highlighted the collaboration between BARC scientists and Cologenesis in bringing the technology from laboratory research to market.

“This innovation has the potential to significantly improve DFU treatment and reduce the risk of severe foot damage,” he said.

The introduction of ColoNoX marks a notable advancement in India’s domestic medical technology capabilities at a time when the need for effective wound-care solutions continues to rise.
