Railways keen on PPP for fencing along tracks

Mamata wants fencing to be done with PPP funding to increase revenue

Railway minister Mamata Banerjee,  pitching hard for public-private partnership in funding railway projects, on Monday said that she wanted to put up fencing along electrified tracks in the PPP model to increase revenue.

"There are 65,000 km of railway tracks in the country. We want to put up fencing along the electrified stretches in the PPP model. Private investors can put up advertisements along the fencings. This will bring revenue," Banerjee said while flagging off the Sealdah-Baruipur Matribhumi Ladies Special at the Sealdah terminus.

While the Railways were developing 1,000 of its 8,000 stations country-wide under the World Class, Multi-functional and Adarsh categories, it wanted to beautify the remaining 7,000 stations with private participation, Banerjee said.

She said the Railways were setting up a railway coach factory at Kanchrapara, a wagon factory at Dankuni and a railway wheel factory at New Jalpaiguri under joint venture with private investors.
