Is DMK's action a political gimmick in the run-up to the general elections?

GN Bureau | March 19, 2013

The DMK on Tuesday announced that it had pulled out of the UPA government citing the government’s stance on the US-sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka as the main reason. The DMK chief M Karunanidhi has also made it clear that the party would not even support the government from outside, however, offering to reconsider the move if the government passed a stronger resolution in parliament against the island nation accused of engaging in human rights violations. Both the DMK and AIADMK have been batting for amending the "diluted" resolution passed by the US; with numerous students in Tamil Nadu thronging the streets in protest. The state’s CM and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa had also written to the PM urging the government to take a “strong and courageous” stand for the welfare of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

In the backdrop of the general elections, which is fast approaching, is the DMK pulling another political gimmick to reiterate that it continues to fight for the cause of ‘Tamil identity’ in the country?
