Do you think BRTS can decongest Delhi roads?

GN Bureau | July 25, 2012

The Delhi government has castigated the study conducted by the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) for the BRTS mess in the capital. While doing so, it has cited the success of the Ahmedabad BRT. The CRRI report says unlike the Ahmedabad BRTS, the Delhi BRT is an open corridor. It says since the Ahmedabad BRTS is a closed system, the commercial travel speeds are much higher. The average speed of buses on Ahmedabad BRT section is 22-25kmph which is much higher than that of Delhi BRTS (13-15kmph).

Moreover, in Ahmedabad the BRTS is constructed on the ring road which is wide and gives enough room for a designate lane for different vehicles. While in Delhi, roads were not widened for BRTS. Marking boundaries for different vehicle has further eaten up the space on the road giving way to traffic jams on this corridor.

Do you think BRTS can actually decongest Delhi roads?
