If Lokpal is her initiative, is Sonia Gandhi strangling her own baby?

GN Bureau | December 22, 2011

Giving a new twist to the Lokpal battle, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said, “Lokpal is our commitment and we will fight for it.” [See Sonia to fight for Lokpal, women's quota] Determined to deny Anna Hazare any credit, she chose not to mention when and under what circumstances, that commitment was made by the party.

Almost claiming ownerships of the initiative, the UPA chairperson put Hazare and the opposition on the same page for spreading “malicious misinformation” in a bid to derail UPA’s legislative agenda. Appearing in a combative mood during a meeting of the parliamentary party on Wednesday, Gandhi exhorted the party’s colleagues not to be “defeatist” about the government’s achievements. She urged the MPs to describe the actions of the government to the people to counter the campaign against the Congress.

However, if Lokpal is really her initiative, do you believe her government should have been more earnest about its draft and passage than it appears now?
