No bail to Kani: is shock justified?

GN Bureau | November 4, 2011

The denial of bail to DMK Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi despite the CBI not objecting to her release has shocked the political fraternity. While media reports said her father was “shocked” and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi was “anguished”; sympathies for Kanimozhi have been pouring in cutting across political lines. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani, who happens to be Kani’s counsel also, called the decision “miscarriage of justice” while BJP leaders Jaswant Singh and Yashwant Sinha have in the past voiced concern over denial of bail to the accused. CPI general secretary AB Bardhan also said, “I think some consideration should be given (to Kanimozhi).” Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari was expectedly “sad” and said, “She should be given bail on humanitarian grounds.”
