Denied power, water Ooty locals protest

Madras HC had ordered disconnection of power and water supply to 200 "illegally constructed" houses

PTI | May 15, 2010

Around 50 people were arrested today when they attempted to picket local electricity board office demanding immediate restoration of power supply to their houses which was disconnected on a court order.

The Madras High Court had ordered the disconnection of power and water supply to the more than 200 houses on the ground they were illegally cosntructed.

Claiming that Nilgiris District Protection Committee, spearheading the stir, has obtained an order from Supreme Court quashing the high court ruling, the agitators wanted TNEB to provide immediate power supply, officials said.

However, TNEB officials said they had not received any order from the Supreme Court for restoring power supply, official sources said.

As the agitators, who also opposed the master plan for the hill town, squatted on the road, police arrested nearly 50 of them while others dispersed, they said.
