All panchayats to be broadband connected within 2 yrs: Govt

Government had approved NOFN for the same in October last year

All the 265,000 gram panchayats in India will be ready for broadband in two years.

'The project is to be completed with in two years,' said Milind Deora minister of state for communications & IT, government of India in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

The gram panchayats will be connected through national optical fibre network (NOFN) for running e-governance applications. The government had given its approval to NOFN on 25th October 2011 to provide broadband connectivity to all the 265,000 gram panchayats through optical fibre cable.

The project will be executed by a special purpose vehicle (SPV) by Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) which is owned by the central government, with equity participation from government, BSNL, Railtel and Powergrid.

The pilot for the aove projects are being conducted in the Paravada block of the Vishakhapatnam district in the Andhra Pradesh; Arian block of Ajmer district in the Rajasthan and Panisagar block of North Tripura district in Tripura.
