Another power substation goes online in Kerala

Second indoor electrical substation will benefit over 30, 000 consumers

GN Bureau | April 24, 2013

With a promise of more voltage and less power cuts, a 33kv indoor electrical substation of the Kerala State Electricity Board, located at Peyad, will be going online, this Monday.

According to a report in The Hindu, this move will benefit over 30,000 consumers placed in the districts of Peyad, Puliyarakkonam, Mangattukadavu and Kadukkamoodu. The facility, which cost over Rs 6 crore to make, was built on land given by the Vilappil Grama Panchayat.

Quoted in The Hindu report, Executive Engineer (Transmission), Thiruvananthapuram, ST Vijayaraj explained, “Though we have put up the building, the grama panchayat will continue to own the land. The substation will be on the ground floor and on the first floor we will house our sub-division office which was till now functioning out of a rented building. We stand to gain a lot of money by this.”

The panchayat has also asked the KSEB to make adjustments in their power bills, addressing arrears of over Rs 20 lakh.

The substation will be fed power through 33kv underground cables, leading down from the Thirumala station. The current facility has the capacity to serve more customers than it currently is serving. Says Vijayaraj, in the report “Peyad has two 5 MVA transformers and can serve four feeders at a time. We are now charging only two of them. This means that the substation has the capacity to serve more people in future.”
