China's registered microbloggers crossed 300 million, much to the disquiet of the government which is mulling measures to regulate the microblog network. China has seen a boom in its microblog sphere over the last two years.

Statistics released on Monday at the 11th China Internet Media Forum in the central province of Hubei show that the number of microbloggers crossed 300 million.

China has the 485 million internet users which is world's highest and it also has the world's largest Internet infrastructure, Zhang Xinsheng, an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

While the microblog is about self-expression and networking, it has also evolved into a platform for advertising, government services, and news dissemination besides highlighting scams as well as official apathy in many cases.

Qian Xiaoqian, deputy head of the State Council Information Office, said China is faced with a new challenge on how to regulate its microblog sphere in order to promote the development of microblog services and create a civilised online environment.
