The corld's largest chipmaker Intel Corp today said it has signed an agreement with the Northeastern Council (NEC) to train teachers and promote use of technology in education.

The NEC is the nodal agency for economic and social development of the Northeastern states comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Intel and NEC will work together on training select resource persons/teachers in each of the NE states as 'NEC Lead Master Trainers', Intel said in a statement.

Intel and NEC will also launch IRIS (Initiative for research and innovation in science) in these states and conduct workshops for select science teachers and some students, to promote and nurture a spirit of research and innovation.

"There is tremendous potential for technology to transform lives in the Northeast. Together with NEC, we are confident of creating an enhanced learning experience for teachers and students by integrating technology into school education methods," Intel India president Praveen Vishakantaiah said.

Amongst other initiatives, both parties will also conduct digital literacy workshops for select 20 government employees in each state to provide basic ICT literacy skills required for e-governance.

"The role of ICT in education is gaining importance day by day to prepare us for global economy. Together with Intel, we will ensure that teachers and students are equipped with the right tools and training to connect to 21st century opportunities through ICT in education much needed in the Northeast," Minister Minister BK Handique, who is also the minister looking after the NE affiars said.
