J&K: Wipro backtracks on UID deal after 'flip-flops'

The contract of J&K government with Wipro along with another local vendor, Compech Technologies to enroll people stands cancelled

GN Bureau | January 3, 2012

Wipro Technologies refused to carry out the national unique identification (UID) project in Jammu & Kashmir citing that it had enough of its flip-flops. The company sent a letter to the chief minister Omar Adullah stating that it would not be able to continue the execution of the project. Abdullah meanwhile pleaded ignorance of the issue.

The contract with Wipro along with another local vendor, Compech Technologies stands cancelled, reported IBNLive on Tuesday.

Wipro and Compech had won the bid and got the mandate to enroll around 27 lakh and 45 lakh respectively. Later, fresh tenders were invited but they failed to get the drive started.

While the UID authority deals with several hiccups in the process of enrolment, a techno group called Eco Bay has moved the J&K high court seeking transparency in the tendering process.

The idea behind the entire project was to prepare over 1.1 crore UID cards with biometric details of every person in the state above the age of five in three years.

CM Abdullah was the first to give his fingerprints for the project in August, but the project is yet to take off.
