To check hospitals flouting bio-medical waste management rules, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is considering online reporting of hospital waste.

A pilot project in this regard has been initiated in the 250-bedded Swami Dayanand Hospital wherein all matters related to segregation, collection, transportation and treatment of hospital waste is being maintained and reported online by the hospital to respective authorities, Dr V K Monga, chairman, public health committee, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, said.

"Hospital waste management is a part of hospital hygiene and maintenance activities. It should be taken up seriously by all hospitals else it can lead to spread of infections and create further complications. In order to maintain transparency in this regard we decided to come up with this novel idea of online reporting of hospital waste management.

"By doing this we are also following the protocol of Delhi Pollution Control Committee in waste management. Data related to how much medical waste was generated in different areas like ICU, OPD, OT and wards, how it was collected, matters related to its segregation and handling, all will be sent online to DPCC," he said.

The pilot project will soon be replicated in all MCD hospitals.

This is a good idea but will it be implemented with the enthusiasm that it deserves? Delhi government has set up a common bio medical waste incineration facility in a park about 30 meters from Sukhdev Vihar. This facility does not employ any pollution control measures and has been emitting highly toxic fumes for almost 4 years. DPCC is aware but continues to give its blessing through test reports which do not find any fault!

So, on the one hand DPCC is proposing to police the waste management at the hospital end but at the same time it chooses not to ensure that atmospheric pollution is restricted when disposing off this waste. How ironic!
