The villagers working in MGNREGA schemes, popularly known as 100 day-work, will get payment through biometric bank account in Birbhum district in West Bengal. The money would be paid to the villagers who worked in the schemes through 'Smart Card', a top official said.

The distribution of the cards started at Mallarpur-I gram panchayat in the district on Sunday. "Birbhum is the first district in the country where such accounts and cards are introduced. A total of 4371 MGNREGA job card holders would be provided with such cards," Assistant Executive Officer of Birbhum Zilla Parishad Soumyajit Das said.

The most important feature of this system is that no other person than the worker would be able to withdrew money from the account and within 48 hours after the completion of job their wages would transferred to their account, the official said. State Bank of India will provide the banking support through their branches and rural kiosks or customer service points (CSP), he said.
