CPI(M) to intensify stir for handing over land to peasants

Party wants Bihar government to make necessary land reforms

PTI | June 16, 2010

CPI(M) today threatened to launch an intense agitation if the NDA government in Bihar failed to ensure physical possession of land to lakhs of peasants holding 'parchas' by June 26.

"We will further intensify our agitation if Nitish Kumar failes to ensure physical possession of land to lakhs of peasants holding parchas", CPI(M) politburo member S R Pillai told reporters.

"Bihar is facing a severe agrarian crisis due to inequitious and exploitative agrarian assets holdings and agrarian relations," he said.

Stating that Bihar had the highest migration rate among all the states in India, Pillai demanded that appropriate amendments be made to the land reform act with regard to ceiling provisions.

He said sharecroppers should be recorded and must be given a fixed tenure with the fare rent fixed.

Besides sharecroppers' 'parchas' should be made a valid document for accessing institutional loans from commercial banks, cooperative banks and other financial institutions.

Pillai accused the Nitish Kumar government of surrendering before the feudal forces who teamed up under the banner of "Kisan Panchayat to prevent implementation of the recommendations of the Bandopadhyay Commission on land reforms".
