The judicial system in Rajasthan has virtually come to a standstill in the wake of the ongoing lawyers' strike over the alleged irregularities in the selection of additional district and sessions judges.

Alleging grave lapses in the recruitment process of 37 judicial officers, the lawyers are demanding scrapping of the entire examination result of Rajasthan Higher Judicial Services (RHJS) and want the process to begun afresh.

The Rajasthan High Court, however, refused the demand, saying no irregularity has taken place.

Allegedly 1,600 working hours of the two seats of High Court (Jaipur and Jodhpur) and 66,000 working hours of various other courts in state have been disturbed due to ongoing strike.

"These court hours could have been more productively used in the interest of litigants provided the advocates had appeared in court," said T H Samma, R G, Rajasthan High Court.

Meanwhile, 1,98,400 High Court litigants wasted around 11.9 lakh working hours in the strike which began on August 28.

However, the court administration claimed that High Court and lower court judges were sitting regularly during the period.

In lower courts over 29,70,000 litigants have wasted more than 1.78 crore hours in the period, sources said.

On an average, 20 benches of High Court judges sit each day and take up over 150 matters per day. However, they could not hear the cases adding to the pendencies.

Over 49,600 cases were listed before various High Court judges in this period but most could not see the light of the day, sources said.
