Six advocates practicing in the Madras High Court today commenced an indefinite fast to press for use of Tamil as the official High Court language.

Meanwhile, various advocates associations, including Madras HIgh Court Advocates' Association have called for boycotting the High Court and other city courts tomorrow for the same reason.

Yesterday, the Joint Committee of Madurai Lawyers' Associations, demanding implementation of Tamil as official High Court language said they would continue boycott of the court till June 18 and depute a team to hold talks with judges and government officials.

The Associations also decided to meet again on Friday to decide the future course of action.

Three lawyers in Coimbatore began an indefinite fast on June 16 to press for this demand, while their counterparts in Sivaganga decided to boycott courts for three days from today.

On June 15, Justices F M Ibrahim Kalifulla, D Murugesan and M Chockalingam of Madras High court held talks with agitating Madurai Bar Association functionaries and told them it would take 15 days to consult other judges and consider their request.

Six advocates in Madurai are on an indefinite fast from June 9 to press for the demand.
