Villagers oppose proposed nuclear power plant in Mithivirdi

6000 MW nuclear power plant proposed in the area under Indo-US civilian nuclear cooperation

PTI | June 11, 2010

People of four villages in Talaja taluka of the district are opposing the 6000 MW nuclear power project proposed to be set up in the region as part of civilian nuclear cooperation between India and the US.

Villagers from Mithivirdi, Jaspara, Mandva and Khadarpara had gathered yesterday and shouted slogans against government when a team of officials from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) and Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd (GPCL) visited the site.

"The government officials had come to take samples of soil and have a look at the site. We, who are going to be affected by the nuclear plant, have not been given any information about it," deputy sarpanch of Jaspara village Shaktisinh Gohil told PTI.

"We have told the district collector number of times through memorandums that we do not want this plant here," he said, adding they did not know if it was good or bad, but wanted government officials to talk to them.

"They come here take samples and go, and when we ask them about the project them do not answer," Gohil added.

"Yesterday evening some officials of NPCIL and GPCL had come, but seeing the huge crowd which had gathered they went off. They came back this morning but went away again after seeing over 3000 people from the villages which are going to be affected," he added.
