Advani meets PM; discusses Census, Parliament tenure issues

Asks PM to explore possibilities of implementing fixed tenures for Parliament and state legislatures

PTI | May 28, 2010

NDA working chairman L K Advani today conveyed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh his concern over illegal Bangladeshi migrants getting enumerated in the ongoing Census.

The opposition leader also asked the Prime Minister to explore possibilities of implementing a system for a fixed tenure of Parliament and state legislatures in the country.

The senior BJP leader had written a letter to Singh on May 15 expressing his apprehensions of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants figuring in the National Population Register (NPR) and National Registration Identity Card (NRIC).

Sources close to Advani said the matter was discussed today between the two leaders.

"The Prime Minister agreed with Advani that this is a serious matter and should be looked into. Singh assured him that the Home Minister will examine all aspects of the issue and send a detailed reply," the sources said.

Advani also brought up the issue of a fixed tenure for Parliament and state legislatures which is being debated in the UK after recent elections there. He has also expressed his views on the subject in his blog.

"UK's Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has started this debate in his country after the recent general elections and there are talks that changes may be made before the next polls there. India should also explore this possibility," sources close to Advani said.

Prime Minister Singh told Advani that there is "merit" in his argument and promised to look into the matter.
